Fun Spots for Families in Wellington - Summer Edition!

Seeing as we’re fast approaching the Christmas/Summer holidays, I thought I’d do an update on my blog post from a few months ago and highlight some our family’s favourites Wellington spots!

Obviously this is by no means exhaustive so feel free to share your favourites as well. We’re always looking for new places to explore around our city!

1.Eastbourne Beach

This one made my last list but it’s such a great option for when you want a relatively easy beach day option. There’s something for everyone with options to splash in the water, lots of green space for a game of cricket, a great playground and some quality cafes only a few steps away if you need a coffee fix. 

2. Paraparaumu Beach

We’ve started heading up to Paraparaumu beach on a semi-regular basis and it’s great! Only a short drive away, especially now with Transmission Gully open, there’s an awesome park and playground, beautiful coastline and good cafes right there too (can you sense a theme?) We’ve had some really lovely picnics up there this year and the benefit of feeling like you’re somewhere different while only being a 30 minute drive away is great!

3. Whitireia Park

With a little bay to splash in, a park to run around in and some great walks, this is a fun option for families. There’s also some great spots to sit and look out towards the South Island if you’re also looking to catch an amazing sunset.  

4. Oriental Bay

We love Wellington City and Oriental Bay is one of our favourites because you have the city vibes but also a really fun little beach to paddle in with some sweet city views. There’s a few different playground options, Waitangi Park not far away and, you guessed it, coffee within walking distance :) 

5. Kaitoke Regional Park

For a non-beach option, Kaitoke is great! Perfect for a picnic and afternoon playing, there’s also options to go bushwalking or have a swim in the river.
