5 Fun Outdoor Activities for Families in Wellington!

The school holidays are only a week away and if you’re anything like me, while the thought of not having a set routine is great, the days can also feel like they stretch out unendingly before you. Taking on the role of chief activity creator for two full weeks is not for the faint of heart!

And while I love spending time with my boys, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve looked at the clock and thought, how is it ONLY 9am??

So with that in mind, I thought I’d put together a handful of fun, free outdoor activities our family enjoys around Wellington, which with this amazing weather we’ve been having should hopefully work well!

And feel free to add your own below as well. Hopefully together we can create a helpful list for us all to use these school holidays!

1.Eastbourne Beach

This is a classic go to in our family - playground, beach, coffee shops close by (we usually head to Hive, or Tartines for French pastries as well if you’re that way inclined) - it ticks all the boxes for our whole family.

2. Oriental Parade

We love the city and try to head in every chance we get. Oriental Parade is great because again, it offers something for the whole family - a couple of playgrounds, some sand and water to play and splash in, good walkways for the kids and that city buzz we love.

We usually will grab a coffee (can you see a theme?) and fluffy’s for the boys from Aye Empanadas but there are lots of options around.

3. Otari-Wilton’s Bush

I’ve done photo sessions here but this last weekend was the first time we’ve explored it as a family and we loved it! Some slightly steeper slopes but even our two year old managed it with some reluctant hand-holding, and plenty of winding paths that our four year old loved leading us around. No coffee shop but that can be forgiven in exchange for the amazing bush, birds and places to explore.

4. Botanical Gardens

One of my favourite things about Wellington is how much bush and nature there is so close to the central city. And the Botanical Gardens are a great place for young families. There are plenty of wide-open spaces for kids to run around, and lots of bush walks around to explore. Find a cozy spot for a family picnic, and don't forget to bring a blanket and some snacks. It's a tranquil and cost-free way to enjoy the outdoors.

5. Matiu/Somes Island/East by West Ferry

This one may be more of a Day Trip but for families up for an adventure, catch the ferry from Eastbourne and head across the harbour. Your first option is to either get off at Matiu/Somes Island and spend a few hours exploring the island. With its rich history, walking trails, and idyllic spots for picnicking, it’s a great place for families, especially those with slightly older kids. Your second option is to carry on over to central Wellington and take some time to hit a playgroup, grab lunch and play in the city before catching the ferry back to Eastbourne.

Hopefully these help to give you a few ideas! I know there’s so many others too so let me know your favourites to add to the list!
